Small Business Grants in Ontario: Every Program Worth Applying For in 2026
I spent two weeks going through every single Ontario small business grant and incentive program. Most lists online are outdated or include programs that expired years ago. This one is current.
The ones that actually give you money (non-repayable)
Ontario Together Fund — For manufacturers pivoting to produce critical goods or adopting advanced manufacturing. Grants up to $500,000. If you're in manufacturing in Ontario, this is the first door to knock on.
CanExport SME — Federal program but hugely relevant for Ontario businesses looking to export. Grants up to $50,000 to help you break into new international markets. Covers market research, trade shows, website localization. The approval rate is surprisingly high if your application is solid.
IRAP (NRC) — The National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program. If you're developing anything innovative — new product, new process, new software — IRAP can fund up to 80% of eligible costs. Grants from $50,000 to $10M+. The catch: you need a dedicated IRAP advisor to champion your file, and getting one takes time.
Digital Main Street — For brick-and-mortar businesses going digital. Grants of $2,500 to $5,000. It's not life-changing money but it's practically free and the application takes 30 minutes.
The ones that lend you money (on good terms)
CSBFP (Canada Small Business Financing Program) — Up to $1,150,000 in government-backed loans. Your bank shares the risk with Ottawa. This is the single most underused financing tool in Canada. If your bank says no, they might say yes under the CSBFP. More on this in our complete CSBFP guide.
BDC — The Business Development Bank of Canada. Higher rates than traditional banks (prime + 3 to 5%) but they'll take risks that RBC and TD won't touch. Startups, acquisitions, turnarounds — BDC has seen it all.
Futurpreneur — If you're 18-39, this is up to $60,000 with no personal guarantee required. Plus two years of mentorship. For young entrepreneurs, this is a no-brainer.
The Ontario-specific ones people miss
Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) vouchers — Connects businesses with researchers at Ontario universities. The voucher covers up to 75% of the project cost. If you need R&D but can't afford a full-time researcher, this is gold.
Regional Development Agencies — FedDev Ontario covers Southern Ontario. FedNor covers Northern Ontario. Both have programs for SMEs that don't make the headlines but hand out millions every year.
The secret to grants: apply to multiple programs simultaneously. The process takes 3-6 months per application. If you apply to one at a time, you'll wait forever. Shotgun approach, but with quality applications.
